GYMNASTICS TO IMPROVE YOUR BODY AWARENESS

Oink LPC • Jun 05, 2023

Here’s a fun word for you; proprioception. It refers to your ability to perceive your body's position without the help of vision, a sort of ‘sixth sense’.

There are sensors in your bones, muscles, and skin that relay information on your body's position to your brain. Without this ability, you wouldn’t be able to even walk without actively thinking about each step.

There are many benefits to working on your body awareness. First and foremost are the improvements it makes to your balance and coordination. Having greater control over your body also leads to better mental health and confidence in yourself.

Here are some activities that can help you develop your body's self-awareness:

CLIMBING.

Climbing is a fantastic way to increase your body awareness (fun too). Climbing anything simple like a ladder helps build body awareness, as it's likely you can climb a ladder without having to check the position of your hands and feet each time you go up a rung.

Even better is climbing a tree or a rock climbing wall. The varied positioning of the handholds will force you to be acutely aware of how you’re positioned. More than that, climbing is an exercise that builds strength and balance throughout the whole body.

OBSTACLE COURSES.

Similarly, obstacle courses are another excellent activity that is fun for all ages! They run the body through a variety of activities such as; climbing, running, jumping, crawling, and balancing.

It is especially good for children because they are not only working their bodies but their minds as they work out the best way to conquer each obstacle.

YOGA.

Yoga is one of the best-known ways of increasing body awareness. In fact, it is widely practiced solely to do so. Unlike some other exercises, yoga seeks to actively improve the mind's ability to exert control over the body.

Through a series of movements, balancing, breathing exercises, and even meditation, yoga seeks to link the body and the mind in a way that gives you even greater control. Like all forms of exercise, yoga has been shown to reduce stress and improve both mental and physical health.

WALKING BACKWARDS.

You might look a bit silly, but walking backward forces your mind to work in a way it usually doesn’t. It even uses muscles that are most likely neglected. Doing this also improves balance and coordination. Just remember to be careful of obstacles and find a safe location when walking backward.
